Healthy Life Expectancy

Key Findings

  • Healthy Life Expectancy is a measure used to estimate the average number of years that an individual is expected to live in a state of self-assessed good or very good health. This data is available to the county level so the data below is for Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City. It should also be noted that this data is subject to people's self-assessment of their health so is not as accurate as figures for life expectancy, ie it can be affected by a population's resilience or otherwise.
  • The Healthy Life Expectancy in Aberdeenshire in 2019 - 2021 was 67.2 years for a man and 67.3 years for a woman. In Aberdeen City, it was 60.2 years for a Man and 61.2 years for a woman. For Scotland, the figures are 60.4 years for a man and 61.1 for a woman. Aberdeen City is approximately equal to the Scottish average whereas Aberdeenshire has one of the highest figures for a council area in Scotland.
  • At a Scottish level the Healthy Life Expectancy for men has been increasing while for women it has been decreasing. It should also be noted that the difference between the Healthy Life Expectancy in the most and least deprived areas in Scotland is 25.1 years for men and 21.5 years for women showing a major difference in quality of life.
