Recreational Activities on the Coast

Key Findings

  • In 2021 the Scottish Government commissioned research on Ocean Literacy. This took the form of a questionnaire with 1,755 members of the public taking part. The full document can be found following this link. The data from this document is at a national scale.
  • This questionnaire was done by asking respondents to list the activities they have visited the coast to do in the previous 12 months.
  • Walk, with or without a dog, accounted for 97% of respondents. Photography, heritage and wildlife watching all scored over 20%.
  • This survey does not give number of people taking part in these activities on the coast or at what time of year these activities take place.
