In 2021 the Scottish Government commissioned research on Ocean Literacy. This took the form of a questionnaire, with 1,755 members of the public taking part. The full document can be found following this link. The data from this document is at a national scale.
The questionnaire asked respondents to list the activities they undertook during visit(s) to the marine environment in the previous 12 months.
97% of respondents said they had gone walking, with or without a dog. A significant proportion of respondents said they had undertaken activities such as photography (30%), visiting heritage sites (30%) and wildlife watching (22%).
The results of this survey do not give the total number of people taking part in these activities on the coast, or at what time of year these activities take place.
