Marine Economy Scotland by sector

Key Findings

Scotland’s marine economy includes a wide range of sectors which create and support employment, providing an important source of income across Scotland.

These figures are measured by approximate Gross Value Added (aGVA). aGVA can be described as the amount a sector contributes to the economy minus the cost of the activity - this can be used as an approximate for profit. The servicing of the Oil and Gas Sector has seen a steady decline since 2013 but appears to be increasing in recent years (Fig. 1). The second largest sector, Fishing, was stable between 2013 and 2019 before impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic were felt between 2020/21 - the sector appears to be recovering (Fig. 1).

Turnover means the total amount spent in a sector. Fig. 2 shows that turnover for the marine sector overall is largely stable, with the exception of the Oil and Gas which has been reducing since 2014 (Fig. 2)

The Fishing secotr continues to be the largest employer in the included marine sectors in Scotland (Fig. 3) and has remained broadly stable through the period 2013 - 2022.
