Mudflats - Donmouth

Donmouth Estuary (Fig. 1) is located just north of Aberdeen City Centre, at the south end of a dune system that runs for over 14 miles from Aberdeen to Forvie. This estuary is small, but hosts a mosaic of habitats including mudflats, saltmarsh, beach and woodland. A number of bird species have been recorded here, including arctic tern (Sterna paradisaea), sandwich tern (Thalasseus sandvicensis), oystercatcher (Haematopus ostralegus), and mallard (Anas platyrhynchos). There is a small haul-out area used by harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) (SOC, n.d.). 

Donmouth was designated as a Local Nature Reserve in 1992, for its local importance to nature (Fig.2) (NatureScot, 1992).
