Scotland’s marine economy employed 71,000 people (headcount), 2.7% of the total Scottish employment. This excludes offshore renewables and oil and gas extraction. Figure 1
Figures show total number of headcount, number of people employed, and number of Full Time Equivalent positions. Many marine sectors such as tourism and inshore fishing employ a large number of people on a part time bases resulting in the large difference.
Numbers of people employed stayed broadly stable until 2019 but fell markedly due to COVID19, there is signs of a slow recovery.
Aberdeen is the local authority with a the largest number of marine jobs in Scotland, with Highland council second and Aberdeenshire first. Figure 2 and 3
Figure for people employed in the Marine Sector in Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City are difficult in interpreted partly because many people may move housing location between the two authorities. Togather figure have remained stable since 2019. Figure 4
