Priority Marine Features: Fish species
Key Findings
- Scotland’s seas sustain an extensive range of fish that have been supporting livelihoods, food and culture in the country for centuries.
- The term ‘wider fish community’ relates to 167 commercial and non-commercial species (including elasmobranchs) collected by the International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS). The IBTS is undertaken twice yearly by Marine Scotland to investigate any changes in bottom-dwelling (demersal) fish communities. Several of these fish species are also protected as Priority Marine Features in Scottish territorial and offshore waters.
